Maputo Fast Forward: creativity, resilience and human potential
Maputo Fast Forward has always represented, for me, much more than a cultural initiative. It is a space that has tried, with determination and imagination, to give voice and life to Mozambique’s creative ecosystem, connecting artists, thinkers, researchers and communities through conferences, residencies, publications and exchanges.
My involvement began in 2017, when I was invited to present at the conference and to lead a workshop on crowdfunding and how it could be applied in the Mozambican context. I reconnected with the initiative in 2022, when Rui Trindade presented the project to the students of the Master’s in Creative Industries Management that I coordinate, a group made up largely of European students, using it as an example of how creative ecosystems can be nurtured through vision, persistence and collaboration.
That moment was especially meaningful to me. My own contribution was modest, but it left a strong impression, not only because of Rui’s generosity in sharing the project, but because it revealed how relevant Maputo Fast Forward had become as a point of reference beyond Mozambique.
What I value most is that the project has continued through different teams and remains active, including through its newsletter and publishing work, which helps make visible some of the best work by African artists and creative practitioners. That continuity matters, because it shows that cultural ecosystems are not built overnight; they are sustained through care, collaboration and persistence.
For me, the broader objective of Maputo Fast Forward is clear: to strengthen cultural and creative life in Mozambique by creating platforms for exchange, learning and visibility, while building links between local and international actors. In an African context where resources are often scarce, that mission becomes even more important. It reminds us that the real strength of a creative ecosystem lies not only in funding, but in the huge human potential, talent and resilience that already exist and only need the right conditions to grow.
